Sultan, Oritsejafor seek tougher action against terrorism
Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Saa’d III and the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, have charged the Federal Government to lead the way in the fight against terrorism in the country in view of its might.
While noting that equity and justice remained the bases for peace in any society, Oritsejafor urged the government to do all in its power to protect every Nigerian and the nation’s economic interest. The Sultan said the fight against terrorism required increased efforts by the government and the people.
They spoke in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Tuesday during the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council meeting.
Oritsejafor described the fight against insecurity as a fight for all, saying since no religion preaches violence, every act of violence should be treated as a crime.
The Sultan, on his part, said the group would not fail in its responsibility to advise the government on the right course.
“Dialogue is the best option for any conflict situation. Religious leaders must always speak the truth. Speaking and not acting what you speak is totally unacceptable,” the Sultan said.
However, Oritsejafor said for the Federal Government to effectively tackle the problems besetting the country, it must strive to manage the economic aspect of the nation well and prosecute corrupt officials to ensure transparency in the system.
Commending Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Godswill Akpabio, for making the state conducive for indigenes and visitors alike, Oritsejafor said there was no limit to the greatness Nigeria could achieve, if it should put into practice most of the things said.
He said the resolutions reached at the end of the parley had the potential to help the government and Nigerians to have new ideas. “Nigerians should see the great potential, dynamism, courage and determination of the religions to correct certain societal ills,” he added.
