Is Almighty God our personal Santa Claus?

www.christianavenue.blogspot.com
When the mighty hand of God moves, we many times do not appreciate or recognize it. We spend time praying for God to intercede, protect, guide and bless someone or some situation and then when things don't work out the way we intended we think God didn't answer our prayers. In many respects, our attitude toward God is eerily similar to a child's opinion of Santa Claus.

Almighty God is not our rich uncle. Almighty God is not our personal concierge, our own private 8 ball, our “go to guy” or personal assistant. God is not our servant but rather our GOD. Until and unless we get this order right, we will forever be outside of God's will living in a state of mutiny and disrespect.

I don't know when the idea entered man's mind that God was his own personal genie in a bottle, but it is all wrong. The whole concept that God is there to serve us, cater to our every whim and provide us with a lavish lifestyle complete with every toy man has ever invented is dead wrong.

God is our Heavenly Father and certainly He desires only good for us. But, that does not mean He will spoil us with “stuff”, win our hearts through giving us everything we want in this life or “bless” us with things that drive our heart away from Him. Unlike man, God does not need to resort to fancy gifts or flattery to prove He loves us.

I have seen Christians literally blame God for their material wealth in this life. I have seen Christians go so far as to advocate that God wants His people to be rich, live in mansions and travel the world in a specially built yacht. Somehow by God doing these things He proves He is Great and how highly He thinks of us, according to this theology.

I am very aware of the splendor of Solomon's temple and how wealthy Solomon was. But, I am also aware of the intense poverty many of God's people have lived in as they did God's will. I do not think it is fair to say absolutely that God wants everyone of His children to be rich or poor. I do not think it is right to demand every Christian either do whatever it takes to make tons of money or give everything they own away.

Instead of praying for things, we should be praying for a heart that is willing and able to serve God in whatever capacity He wills. Instead of demanding we always feel good, we should be praying that no matter what happens to this body, we can testify to God's greatness and great love for us. Instead of telling God what we think He should do, we need to pray that we do what He wants US to do.

When we allow God to do things His way, they are always right. When we demand God do things our way, they are usually wrong. This is why our prayer should always be that God mold us into His vessel so that we may bear witness to His power, glory and honor. “Not my will but thine be done” should be the cry of our hearts and our greatest desire in this life.
