Sometimes You Just Need A Hug

www.christianavenue.blogspot.com

One of the things we are wired to do is "fix" things. When we know that someone is in trouble, we want to fix it. When we know that someone is experiencing a tragedy or loss, we search for words to say in order to make it better. The problem is, often times our words are exactly what the person does not need at the moment.

Sometimes, no matter what you say, things are not going to get better. Someone may still abandon their family. The test might be positive. A loved one might not get better or someone else gets the job instead of you. We live in a fallen world which is not "okay". It is broken.

Have you ever noticed that the more intense your feelings are, the more difficult it is to verbally express them? In English, there is a phrase we use to describe this phenomenon. We say that someone is at a loss for words.

When I was going through cancer treatment, experiencing more pain and suffering both mentally and physically than I had ever imagined possible, it really wasn't words that comforted me. The thing which comforted me the most was human touch.

The gentle hug of friends did not make the problems go POOF! However, something extraordinary happened. I didn't feel alone and that in turn made me feel safe and loved. I didn't know how it would happen but with those hugs, came hope.

We talk too much. Perhaps rather than listening to ourselves talk, perhaps rather than trying to come up with solutions we need to stop and remember... sometimes you just need a hug.

Blessings!
