We each have an amazing story of sin and Jesus’ grace in our lives. It’s about time we each started sharing it. 

MY STORY

You know you have committed some serious sin when you wake up in the morning alone and enclosed in four walls made of cinderblock and stainless steel inside a federal prison.

Stories of sin and grace are a microcosm of the human condition.

You know you have received some serious grace when you wake up in the morning to a beautiful wife and two adorable children, before starting your day in prayer and planning for the release of your book.

That is my story of sin and grace.

WHY STORIES ARE POWERFUL

Everyone has a story of sin and grace. And few stories are as powerful as a sin and grace story. We see them every day—just think about the vast number of books and movies containing a redemption story.

The reason people enjoy such stories of sin and grace is because they are a microcosm of the human condition: we all have sinned and we know it, and yet we all have the ability to receive God’s unearned grace through his offer of salvation (Titus 2:11).

Your story might be the story that opens them up to hearing Jesus’ story.

You don’t need to believe in Jesus to believe that sin is real, even if you don’t call it that. Because sin and brokenness in the world, is easily understandable, the story of sin can be used to reach those who are initially reticent to hearing a lecture on their need to repent. 

“. . . always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.” 1 Peter 3:15

BLURT IT OUT

The next time an opportunity arises with an unbelieving family member, friend, or co-worker, try sitting them down and telling them about the worst sin problem you had prior to becoming a Christian.

Just blurt it out.

• Did I ever tell you how I stole money from my best friend?
• Did you know I was a horrible husband/wife?
• Did I ever tell you about when I was a chronic liar?
• Did you know I used to have a porn addiction? 

Chances are, if you are living a “religious” life, your friend will have had no idea that this sin was an issue for you. And chances are that sharing this could radically change their perception of forgiveness, their perception of grace.

Once you repent of and give up the sin, both past and the present—for God makes us a new creation, not a perfect one—then share your story of how God has poured his grace out on you. How God changed you from the inside out through grace alone. And how your life has never been the same.

IT’S TIME

Your story might be the story that opens them up to hearing Jesus’ story—the one that can change their life, eternally.
