ONITSHA—ANAMBRA State Government yesterday threatened to shut down illegal motor parks in Awka, Nnewi, Onitsha and other major towns to ease traffic congestion in the state.
Commissioner for Transport, Dr Chike Ohamobi, who announced this while speaking to newsmen, said government decision followed the obstruction of free flow of traffic on major roads by activities of the illegal parks operators.
He said his ministry had already started decongestion of roads as directed by Governor Peter Obi and decried activities of some miscreants who attacked law enforcement agents deployed to enforce the decongestion order.
According to him, “we are ensuring that illegal loading bays are closed down. We are building bus stops in the urban areas so that drivers drop passengers and move immediately and we will not spare any defaulter”.
While appealing to commercial motorcycle operators otherwise known as Okada riders to pay their taxes and levies, Ohamobi said government would not hesitate to deal decisively with any of them that failed to comply with the directive.
He said government had not collected any form of tax from the commercial motorcycle operators in the last eight months.
On ban on Okada, Ohamobi said government had not placed ban on commercial motorcycles, saying rather government was properly articulating the issue and would soon come up with a decision that would be good for the people of the state.
He added that government was discussing with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, and Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, to evolve ways of reducing incessant accidents involving heavy trucks, particularly tankers that carry petrol.
