Nigerian gospel

Gospel music is a kind of African, motivational Christian music that has become a major part of Nigerian music. In the 1960s the Evangelical Church of West Africa Choir was popular, and in the early 1970s Bola Aare, Sola Rotimi, Good women Choir, Ebenezer Obey and later, Panam Percy Paul, Onyeka Onwenu, Lanre Teriba (ATORISE), Tope Alabi, Asu Ekiye, Keffi, and Sammie Okposo were notable. Also, in the early 1970s & 80s Arch Bishop Benson Idahosa's choir, The Christian Redeemed Voices were known for their gospel sound. He the late Bishop, would purchase instruments for the choir and each one of them would be mastered by skillful musicians. The Bishop would challenge his student pastors and young adult church members to pick up instruments and play them. Play them...they did, no training only the gift of God deposited and called out by the Bishop. There was a lady by the name of Minister Dorothy James (Evangel Temple, USA) and Rev. David Mporampora(Uganda)they transformed gospel music in West Africa. Nigeria in particular. I would say without a doubt, they laid the foundation of the sound we now hear. Many students were from other West African nations and they took that sound and passion for Gospel music back with them. Jackson Tugbeh (Liberia), now (Lagos) Rev. Lesley Tex (Ghana) were students and a part of the influence. The Arts, the worship dance saw its start in Africa in the Church of God Mission. Thanks to Arch Bishop Idahosa who was open to all God had for his people, the gospel sound would never be the same. The fusion in music and the gospel he bought to Africa is still amazing.

A number of gospel artistes have released albums that are quite commendable such as Ty Bello, AMAA (Abimbola Awolumate's Everlasting Arms), Foluke Umosen, Soji Israel, Segun Obe, Samsong among others. Artistes like Rooftop MCs, The Bossman, BOUQUI, Frank Edwards[1] and Segun Ogundeko(The Lord's trumpeter) are also very well known for their gospel hip hop styles. They have released singles and albums that have won several awards.

Besides the above mentioned gospels artistes, we have some others who have made national and international impact. They include: Kunle Ajayi, Buchi, Sinachi, Yetunde Are among others. There are also some notable church choirs that have distinguished themselves especially with contemporary music. Worthy of mentioning is Oyo Province 4 Mass choir of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Jesus Embassy, Christ Embassy, Oke Bola - Ibadan, Nigeria.

Also, there are many Nigerian gospel artists based in other parts of the world whose music has a strong influence on Nigerians, home and abroad. Such artists include Jide Arowolo (UK), Dayo Bello (UK), David Ojo (USA), Funmi Williams (UK), [1] Oluwakemi (UK), Gbenga Wise (USA), Martin Adu (Netherland) Peter Onu De-Nice (Germany), Osene Odia-Ighodaro (USA) and el Mafrex (UK) who recently got nominated for the 2012 MOBO Awards.[2]

Now Christian rock artistes like Frank Edwards, Joe Praise and Eben are joing the forum of Good gospel artistes. Frank Edwards which is the hottest of them all and can be called the best gospel artiste in Nigeria for now is making waves with his music as he brings people to another dimension of rock and worship with his songs. Nigeria's Gospel music is still rising fast with the emergence of gospel artistes like Psalm Ebube, Tb one, to mention a few.

BUCHI

A singer, novelist, fashion designer and an evangelist, buchi is one gospel music artiste who has traversed the length and breadth of Nigeria, some parts of Africa and Europe with his reggae gospel music.
Born in Kaduna to parents from Abia State,Nigeria, his early education started in enugu and took him through Methodist College Uzuakoli and Federal Goverrnment College Enugu. In 1983 he got admitted into university of lagos to study English Language and Literary Studies where he obtained a B.A in 1986 and M.A in 1988, In the same year,Buchi picked up an appointment as lecturer inthe same institution while he pursued PhD Program.

Perhaps, not many followers of Nigeria gospel music scene knew that baritone voice, yet debonair gospel artiste, Onyebuchi has done so much for the growing sector.
With three albums featuring hit songs like: It is well, What a mighty God, Jesus must be honoured, and the latest, Nma Nma, the singer, simply called Buchi may have as well warmed himself into the hearts of millions of music lovers. While his talents as a singer and composer remain legendary, surprisingly, the Abia-State-born singer started out as a D.J. He later became a lecturer-cum-writer at the University of Lagos before he heeded the divine call.
To say the least, Buchi as a man of many parts even combined his job as a scholar with tailoring. Now that he is into full-time music ministration, many want to know if the reggae artiste has dumped his other talents for music. Speaking on Galaxy T.V. recently, the musician, gave an emphatic no to insinuations that his books, and taste for fashion may have given way to music. "
No! No! I haven't dropped my books. I didn't really have to subdue one talent to lift up the other. I will go back eventually," he said even as his voice reverberated in the studio. Evidently, Buchi's string of talents is second nature. Little wonder, they manifest with much ease.
So, for Buchi to continue being himself, he admits that none of his talents would be buried for the other. Hear him, " writing comes to me naturally; tailoring was something I did for a living alongside teaching, but for the gospel to grow, I had to sing."
Talking about Buchi's metamorphosis from a D.J., poet, and minister of the word, one thing led to another. " Initially, I set out to write books, poems, novels and about issues in the country and beyond. But, I found out that readership has dwindled. However, I needed to amplify my writings, which I did by singing my poems. Infact, some of the songs contained in my first album, This Day were taken from my poetry collections." Literally speaking, Buchi sings in order to give a voice to his thoughts.
Later in his career, Buchi's focus changed. Now, the artiste has moved from expressing his thoughts to singing for the gospel. " When I received the message a few years back, it became so compelling that I needed to transmit it to all. When it was time to sing, I knew it was time to take the gospel to the world."
In a country inundated with a myriad of genre, Buchi's music stands out. With his singing partner, Papa English, Buchi has been able to evolve a style that is strictly reggae but with gospel lyrics.
Coming into music
My active involvement in music began when I was pursuing my Masters degree. At that time, I was also a D.J. in a niteclub, I would go to school from Monday to Friday and on weekends, go to the club. I think, that the whole thing blossomed from there. In 1992, when I became a born-again Christian, what naturally came to me was the kind of music I used to play at the club.
Nigerian music industry
It's really beautiful. With music many people are expressing themselves in a variety of ways. Nigerian music is deep. Just like most things in Nigeria, many people are gifted in music. Nigerian music is not restricted to any genre. I think that we're diverse.
Need for change
I see a lot of things that need to be celebrated about Nigerian music. Nowadays, you'll see young people doing songs that condition their minds; songs that are hits all over the world. That's really beautiful. Today, Nigerian music has risen to the point that you can hold big concerts without a foreign artiste as main attraction.
Mediocrity
There is mediocrity in everything. But when you hold on to what is good, and celebrate it, it lives long. With time, the mediocres will fall by the wayside, and the strong lyrics will be glorified.
Piracy
Every song that sells get pirated one way or the other. I think what is needed mostly is education and public enlightenment. First of all, people need to know what piracy is all about. Piracy is not all about duplicating people's works without permission, but when you play someone else's music on radio, T.V. in a hotel, or as sound track without compensation that's piracy. When you take somebody's song without permission, that's piracy. If the perpetrators of the offence are informed about the weight of their offence, I don't think that they will be so bold to continue in the crime.
Message in Nma, nma
It's a song of thanksgiving. I am not trying to say anything anymore or teach a lesson. It's just a song from a heart full of gratitude to God. In the video, I am simply singing out Nma, nma. There is a central message that in every situation you find yourself, just keep thanking God.
Favourite song
I talk about my family; my lovely wife
My cap
I can't miss my cap. I've always worn the caps, long before I came into music.
Favourite Nigerian artiste
I have so many of them. One of them is Papa English. He sings wonderfully. There are many great musicians in the country because they don't have albums, we do not celebrate their works.
Publishing my works
I do hope so. Some of them will be published before the end of this year. It is a novel that is partly fiction and partly non-fiction. The story is going to be about me and my journey into music. When you go to the churches, there are many great musicians. I like Mike Aremu; I like what he does with the saxophone.

Psalm 150: 6 "Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord!"

Evangelist Bola Are

Foremost singer and clergy, Evangelist Bola Are has said that her mission in life is to praise God, using the Yoruba culture and language as carrier of message. The music diva who was among the few artistes who pioneered the gospel genre in Nigeria told Daily Sun recently that she only praises her Creator and not human

beings. She disclosed why she has always rejected jobs which were meant mainly to praise individuals and not God. “In my own music, I do not sing praises about people, but I only praise God.

There are many things people can do to praise God and we can see this in the Bible. So when people call me for performances to praise them, I always tell them, I have not praised God enough, so why should evangelists be praising human beings?”
explained

Are who served as President of Gospel Musicians Association of Nigeria (GOMAN) for over five years.
Asked about some of the erring members of the association, Are said the real gospel musicians would always do well and obey the laws of the associations as well as doctrines of the gospel, while those who are not real would not. Her words: “Those who are not called know themselves and have refused to join GOMAN. But not all gospel musicians are doing the wrong things.

There are some who sing or protect the image of God through their music” On her latest works, Are hinted that she has produced 62 albums to date and that she is set to release four in the video format through Remdel Optimum Communications soon. These include Adura Owuro(Morning Prayers), Gbongbo Idile Jesu(Root of Jesus’ doctines),Oluwa Ni Oluso Aguntan Mi(The Lord is my Shepherd) and Oore Ofe(Grace).

Are also reminisced on her tenure as president of GOMAN, noting that she rallied many gospel musicians from different parts of the country to become members of the association. However, part of her challenges was how to integrate musicians from a particular segment of the North, East and South to bring gospel artistes together for unity. But some of our colleagues from the East were not cooperating. In my five and a half years of leadership, I tried as much as possible to involve the entire nation but some people felt that since I am Yoruba, I can only work for the interest of Yoruba singers and I found this rather dissappointing and upsetting.’’

As president, evangelist recalled how she got the association popular, secured a bank account and how she registered the association. Her words: “But after sometime, I decided to step aside based on God’s instruction. I discovered that rivalry and disunity were setting in and that would not help the association. After I left, Rotimi Odukoya (Telemi) took over and I believe he is doing his best to address the problems of the association.”

The veteran gospel singer who hails from Ondo State also recalled how she started her career “ I was born with music and everyone in my family knew I was going to be a singer and evangelist. In fact, my birth and career had been prophesied by Apostle Babalola, so no one was surprised that I started singing as early as when I was a child. This is because God created me mainly to speak to the people through music.”

MIKE AREMU
Mike Aremu can easily be seen as one of the frontrunners of world-class saxophone players but what sets this distinguished musician apart is ability to draw from traditional Nigerian sounds to create a sound that represents both creative-passion and his culture.

Growing up in the state of Niger, Nigeria (West Africa), and his musical interest started from the age of eight where in Church each child was encouraged in playing a musical instrument, from there with some basic lessons and determination by 1995 he decided to make the full transition and concentrate solely on the Saxophone. The following year, he joined House on the Rock’s music team playing alongside the likes of Sammie Okposo, Agboola Shadare, Abiodun Akhigbe, Victor James, Gbenga Owoeye Wise and others. At about this time, Mike was also playing with the Compassion Band of the Strong Tower Mission. As his confidence grew so did his reputation as a charismatic musician. This resulted in a stream of appearances at such venues in Nigeria as Pintos, The Green Lion, Club Towers, K’s Place and Mega Plaza’s Dome. Demand for his talent came in thick and fast with Mike completing session work for Onyeka Onwenu, Ras Kimono, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, Kingsley Ike and Olufunmi to mention a few.

The next step in Mike’s career was signing a record deal with Kennis Music Label, Nigeria’s largest record label, through which he released two chart-topping albums “Dance” (1999) and “No Shaking” (2002) shifting a combined total of more than 1.5 million copies. He has also recorded two songs for the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) in the United States.

He has also played at Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), the UK’s largest Pentecostal Church and many of the branches of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) one of the world’s largest chains of Nigerian-based Church networks.

Mike Aremu also performed at the London Festival of Life (FOL) an event that was attended by over 40,000 people at the Excel Centre, London. This event took place in March 28th, 2008. The Green Belt festival was also a part of a major feat for his music career as he performed to a 30,000 audience with about 90% Caucasian.

As part of his high demand from his fans across the world, he put together a debut concert to crown his four month tour in the United Kingdom at the famous and prestigious jazz café October 2008, an event which sold out and made history as one of the few Africans to ever make such landmark.

Mike is the convener of the biggest jazz concert in Nigeria, Sax Appeal, a concept which is geared towards the rebirth and promotion of live musical performances in Nigeria. Also as an objective, to create a platform for interaction between Sponsoring Organization, Corporate Executives and Entrepreneurs coming together under an entertainment friendly environment. Always a cultural and religious traditionalist, Obey worked within the praise song mold, vaunting both Christianity and the various heads of state for whom he played. But while his lyrics were traditional, his musical direction was highly innovative. In an effort to rise above his competition, Obey began to develop new musical "systems," adding as many as 20 new musicians to his ensemble at a time, extending the length of his album tracks, and pumping out hit after hit. A stylish and bluesy guitarist whose music had been contagious in Nigeria for years, Obey finally enjoyed international success in 1980 with Current Affairs. — Leon Jackson Similar Artists: King Sunny Ade Segun Adewale Roots and Influences: I.K. Yinka Ayefele

Yinka Ayefele, the first child of his parents, in his early 40′s, hailed from
Ipoti-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria. He had his primary and secondary education at
Our Saviours Anglican Primary School, Ipoti-Ekiti, Nigeria. After his elementary
education, he proceeded to Ipoti Community Secondary School and later to Ondo
State College of Arts and Science, (OSCAS) Ikare Akoko, Nigeria.

For many years that Yinka Ayefele worked as a freelance broadcast

journalist at the FRCN, Ibadan, Nigeria, not many Nigerians knew about him
and his talents for music. He used to produce jingles and musical works on
radio.

He became a household name after he was involved in a ghastly automobile
accident in 1997, which damaged his spinal cord, and paralyzed from the waist
down. Yinka Ayefele, a Tungba Gospel music artist, with a fusion of local juju,
Fuji, and Makosa flavor, turned a mishap into a great opportunity that has left
him a household name.

After spending nine months on the hospital bed, his friend, Kola Olootu
advised that instead of wasting away in the hospital, he should put some songs
together. The plan was for him to launch the album and use some of the proceeds
for further medical treatment abroad. Ayefele’s dexterity in musical composition
ironically came into limelight after releasing his first album; “Bitter
Experience”.

The success of Bitter Experience marked the turning point in his life, with
the release of “Sweet Experience”. Ayefele’s profile in the gospel
music industry has been on the rise since Sweet Experience. There have been
successful albums such are ” Something Else” and ” Divine Intervention”.

The albums went to establish his covenant with God as they were all
successful too, as a result of inspiration from God. The title “Bitter
Experience” has to do with his ordeal, “Sweet Experience” was the sweetness that
followed the success of “Bitter Experience”. In short, each title comes with its
meaning and he prayed before each album is titled.

He is the trend, source of inspiration and rave of the moment among highlife
and gospel music lovers. Yinka Ayefele has turned his ordeals into gains and
positive changes as he works in the Lord’s vineyard. The voice of a journalist
turned gospel artist is not only touchy and captivating but very entertaining.
Yinka Ayefele is a big act whose music appeals to everyone irrespective of
language or religion.

The day he had the accident marked the turning point in his life. He never
thought he would end up becoming famous. He thought the end had come when the
accident happened, but God spared his life for a purpose. Yinka Ayefele felt
like the end had come when he was confined to a wheelchair.

Ayefele is mostly seen on the wheelchair, but he sometimes found pleasure in
standing on his two legs, lying flat on a surface or sitting down to perform or
welcome his guests. Unknown to him, God has other plans in store for him. As he
trudged through life, hopelessness and feeling rejected by the society, a chance
recording of a musical album in a back street studio in Ibadan, Nigeria, was all
God needed to lift the juju-gospel crooner to the top.

Dr Panam Percy Paul

Meet Panam Percy Paul, the man who doesn’t collabo with ‘sinners’

He was born in Kaduna, raised in Zaria. He is from Adamawa.
He gave his life to Christian 1976, The man with the voice of a nightingale is originally from Adamawa, married his damsel, Tina on the first of January 1981, blessed with 4 children, Leah, Lisa, Harley and Loraine, and also blessed with three adopted children, Jemima Mbaya, Elsie and Godfrey Dillings. Together today he is blessed with six biological and 7 adopted grandchildren.

The Beginning
“I spent my early life in various parts of Nigeria because my father was an officer (Major) in the Nigerian Army, and he was always on reassignment. My parents are members of the Lutheran Church.

My mother was a composer. Whenever my father was transferred to a new place, we would go to church there. My mother would join the women’s choir or women’s fellowship of that church and would write Christian songs for them to sing.

“My father liked music too, especially the American “country western” music, and he had a big collection of gramophone records made by singers such as Jim Reeves. I used to listen to these records and imagine that I was the singer.

Musical Instruments
“In 1961, I started to play my first musical instrument, the harmonica. My father taught me to play the organ. I started playing the guitar in 1975. Even the man who actually taught me how to play the guitar did not even believe that I learnt it from him.

My teacher, Mr. Saidi was teaching a fellow student how to play the guitar… and I saw how the student was arranging his fingers on the guitar and looking at the chord chart, and I became interested. So after a while he had the need to go to the bathroom and so I picked it up and within 15 minutes, I was already playing the C, F, and G notes and singing.

“I later asked my father to buy me a guitar, so he bought a cheap acoustic guitar for me. I taught myself to play and would try to mimic the song and play along on my father’s records.

Later, I would entertain my parents, brothers and sisters by playing the guitar and singing along. My renditions. They would all laugh, but my mother would encourage me saying, “Son, keep it up. Something good is going to come out of that.”

“One year I entered for a music competition, but my preparation was insufficient. Facing the crowd, I became so nervous that my performance was woeful. I did not know what to do so my father walked up and dragged me off the stage. I was humiliated, but I was not discouraged. I practiced diligently, entered the competition again the next year and took first position.

Knowing Christ
“I became born again on June 13, 1976. I was what you might consider a sickler but not as having sickle cell anaemia. Every 3 months in a year found me bedridden because I had high fever there was some kind of congestion or whatever in my chest. Each time it came, it was so bad that I thought I would die.
